This large popular genus contains approximately 75 epiphytic species. The genus ranges from Mexico, thru Central America, Northern South America, into Brazil. They are popular because of their large, bizarre, and colorful blooms. The blooms, which are very waxy and fragrant, last less than a week.

CULTIVATION

Stanhopeas produce pendant spikes from the base of the plant. The best container for this genus is slatted basket, wood or plastic, so the spikes can penetrate the media and bloom below the plant. Prefers a potting mixture, which retains a little moisture year around

such as coconut chips, Fine Bark Media, Phalaenopsis Bark Media or Sphaghum Moss Long Fiber OSG3). Partial shade is best, as bright sun burns the thin leaves.
