In their native habitats, most epiphytic (tree dwelling) orchid generae are subject to constant fresh water drenching (rain) with
subsequent drying (constant air flow), so they are not usually subjected to heavy fungal and/or pest infestations. In addition, many of
their endemic pests, have their own predators" to control them. Only when drastic evironmental changes stress the orchids do they
succumb to heavy predations or infestations. One such stress, is their removal into "captivity". Now the hobbyists has to provide
the protections needed to combat pests, fungal infections, rots, etc.
