Bulbophyllum Page 2

Bulbophyllum is a pantropical genus centered in southeast asia, spreading east to New Guinea and Australia, west through India, Africa into the tropical areas of the Americas, including the southern tip of Florida. The largest number of Bulbophyllums are found in the Far East. New Guinea has recorded over 700 distinct species within its borders.

As you can well imagine, the diversity, within the genus, is truly amazing. It is easy to understand that division, of this giant genus, into smaller, more workable groups would be desirable; however, for over 174 years, many taxonomists have tried . But to date, no one has succeeded. In any longstanding division, there is always a grey area where the generic characteristics, of the new genus, overlaps the old one and eventually the new genus is reabsorbed into Bulbophyllum. In many instances, it is not unusual to find an individual species, with several names, depending on which taxonomic division it is placed in. In most cases, the plants are able to maintain the same species epithet when changing genus; however, in some, the species epithet has to be changed due to prior use. (If known, we place both names on the plant).
