Probably the most successful division has been the Section Cirrhopetalum, with its showy umbels of flowers spreading above the leaves like an open umbrella. The British taxomonist Dr. John Lindley established Cirrhopetalum as a separate genus in 1824, but today most authors have reduced Cirrhopetalum to sectional status in Bulbophyllum; however the RHS still maintains Cirrhopetalum as a separate and distinct genus for hybrid registration purposes. For such a large genus, very little hybridizing has been undertaken. From the period 1936 to December, 1995, only twenty-three (23) hybrids have been registered. There have been two (2) Bulbophyllum by Bulbophyllum crosses, twelve (12) Cirrhopetalum by Cirrhopetalum crosses, and nine (9) Cirrhopetalum by Bulbophyllum crosses.
