Plants of this species, which has a very wide habitat distribution, are rather uncommon in hobby collections. There is some confusion regarding the taxonomic status of Chysis aurea and Chysis laevis. Some authorities consider aurea and laevis to be synonymous. Placing the distribution as Mexico, through Central America, western side of South America to Peru; however, other taxonomic authorities consider plants inhabiting Mexico and northern Central America to be C. laevis, while the South American plants are C. aurea. Although very similar, the flowers of C. laevis are larger, have slight differences in lip structures (keels), and C. laevis is somewhat lighter colored than those of those of C. aurea.

A deciduous orchid, the pseudobulbs of the Chysis laevis are leafless some of the year. The waxy, yellow flowers are touched with violet. The flower stem, which grows from the base of the plant, is usually pendant (grows down) rather than up. Therefore, Chysis laevis is best grown mounted so the pendant flowers can hang down.

Chysis laevis blooms in the spring into the summer. The flowers last two to three weeks. It prefers intermediate temperatures, filtered light, and to be kept evenly moist during active growth. Keep it dry after the leaves fall off.
